New York native Cristina Orbé didn’t start playing music until 2000 – which is astonishing because her music is already undeniably poignant. Listening to Orbe’s music you couldn’t help but be drawn in by the subtle vibrations of her acoustic guitar and her alluring voice. Orbe’s songs have a powerful sense of melody and social voice but at the same time have a curious disarming quality – one that allows the listener to be taken in by Orbe’s sharp lyrics while remaining absorbed by the overall dynamic of the simply composed music.

She's shared the stage with Saul Williams, Bill Frissel, and Michael Franti. She's played Bumbershoot, the Vancouver Hip Hop Film Festival, Club Passim, Nuyorican, and The Knitting Factory, to name a few.

(via Ananda Osel / Photo by Motzo)

See Cristina and the other amazing artists on May 14th and May 15 at the Ranier Valley Cultural Center. Luci's Lamb is a black classical expressionist view of the juxtaposition, interdependence, & fluidity of the sacred & the profane. A multi-media work in progress that employs the use of movement, imagery, text and song, this post-punk epic faerie tale re-imagines the relationship between Jesus and Lucifer.

okanomodé is the alter ego of wordsmith, composer, blak faerie, glamazon warrior – SoulChilde BlueSun. He is the ringleader of a musical stage experience called THE CAROUSEL, and featured vocalist with several projects including funk/hip-hop band Big World Breaks, free jazz band Threat Of Beauty, and The New Seattle Brass Ensemble. He is a regular featured vocalist for deep-house diva Nadirah Shakoor and has shared the stage with musical artists Yahzarah, Choklate, Ursula Rucker, Osunlade, Digable Planets, Janelle Monae and more.

See okanomodé and other fantastic artists this weekend at the CREATION Project showcase. Tickets are available here. Read More...

The showcase piece is a multimedia montage of spoken word, acapella vocals, music, live art, and historical/family photographs – exploring the journeys of an African American family from Marshall Texas to Seattle during WWII. Of African American/Aleut heritage, Storme's work is rooted in complex and rich identities.

Storme Webber is a Seattle-born, internationally nurtured writer/poet/performer/visual artist. Mentored by Angela Davis while studying in the Bay Area, she continued on to NYC, London, Berlin and other cities to perform her work in theater, film, stage and television.

Most recently seen on the Sundance Channel in the documentary “Venus Boyz”, her work can also be found in the anthologies: “Voices Rising: 20 Years of Black LGBT Writing” (Redbone Press), and “Beyond Boundaries: Black Women Writing New Worlds” (Pluto Press).

See Storme this weekend, May 14th and 15th, at the CREATION Project Showcase.

It is 1972, and 16-year-old Desiree Hailey, admittedly the school dork, and one of only two Black students at Seattle’s White High School High, has just read Eldridge Cleaver’s revolutionary memoir, Soul On Ice, and her life will never be the same. Suddenly she’s on a mission to engage with her Black roots, to really “get into” her Blackness. When one of her classmates commits suicide, Desiree realizes the tenuousness of life and goes into overdrive to accomplish her goals.

This solo performance piece conceived, written and performed by Amontaine Aurore, combines comedy, drama, multiple characterizations, music, dance, and elements of vocabulary and history. It explores the multi-layered issues around identity, and the distress and disorientation resulting from the uncertainty about one’s self and one’s role in society. It invites the audience to share the joys, sorrows, failures and victories of one girl’s search for her true worth.

See Amontaine this weekend, May 14th and 15th, at the CREATION Project Showcase.
