In 2004, in conjunction with its groundbreaking Black to the Future Black Science Fiction Festival, and in partnership with Garfield High School, Safeco’s READ ON! Project, and the Seattle Public Library/Douglass Truth Branch, the Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas published the first issue of BEYOND, an online magazine of speculative fiction by high school-age writers. Again focusing on fantastic fiction and poetry by or about African-descended peoples, this second issue of BEYOND Magazine is published solely by The Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas. Editor Nisi Shawl, also an acclaimed author and critic of fantastic fiction, gave special individualized tutorials on rewriting and critiquing to this year’s BEYOND contributors. Beyond Magazine is generously supported by Verizon and the Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, City of Seattle.
