In 2004, in conjunction with its groundbreaking Black to the Future Black Science Fiction Festival, and in partnership with Garfield High School, Safeco’s READ ON! Project, and the Seattle Public Library/Douglass Truth Branch, the Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas published the first issue of BEYOND, an online magazine of speculative fiction by high school-age writers. Again focusing on fantastic fiction and poetry by or about African-descended peoples, this second issue of BEYOND Magazine is published solely by The Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas. Editor Nisi Shawl, also an acclaimed author and critic of fantastic fiction, gave special individualized tutorials on rewriting and critiquing to this year’s BEYOND contributors.
