What is Black to the Future: A Black Science Fiction Festival?

Black to the Future is a groundbreaking multidisciplinary festival featuring some of the nation’s most accomplished science fiction novelists and essayists including Octavia Butler, Tananarive Due, Steven Barns and Walter Mosley. This festival, the first of its kind, will explore science fiction in not only literature, but also in film, music, and other forms of creative expression. For three days, we will celebrate the remarkable accomplishments that black artists have made in speculative fiction through engaging and exciting programs including:

- Panels, talks, workshops and book signings
- A Black Science Fiction Film Festival
- Performing arts
- A Black Science Fiction book store and resource room

June 11-13, 2004 (Friday – Sunday)

What are the goals of the festival?


- To offer audiences exposure to some of the leading Black artists inspired by science fiction.
- To provide outstanding Black writers and artists with a prominent showcase for their talents and the rare opportunity to engage in stimulating fellowship with their peers.
- To educate youth with direct exposure and interaction with accomplished Black artists
- To “make the invisible visible” by shedding light on the often overlooked role that Blacks have played in shaping an ever popular genre.

The goals of the Black to the Future Festival are inline with the CD Forum’s ongoing mission of offering progressive programs that encourage thought and debate on African American Culture.

Is this a conference or a convention/can I submit academic papers?

Black to the Future is a multidisciplinary festival (see Q. 1), it is not an academic conference.

Where is the festival/where will events be held?

Black to the Future will be held in Seattle, WA at three different sites.
- Opening night will take place on Friday, June 11th at the Seattle Repertory Theatre
- Saturday, June 12th and Sunday, June 13th festival events will be held at the Seattle Center’s Northwest Rooms.
- The Film Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday (June 12 & 13) evenings at The Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center.

Where can I make hotel reservations?

The official hotel sponsor of Black to the Future is the Grand Hyatt Seattle. The Grand Hyatt is steps away from the Monorail, which takes you directly to the Seattle Center. To reserve a room at a discount rate call 206-774-6201 and mention Black to the Future. Limited discounted rooms are available for $149.00/night, depending upon availability. The deadline for this special rate is May 21. Discount and availability are not guaranteed.

Will there be a book store?

Yes, there will be a Black Science Fiction bookstore sponsored by Elliot Bay Book Co.

How much are tickets/ how do I purchase tickets?

Please visit our ticket information page for questions about the purchase of tickets.

Will tickets be available the day of the event?

Yes, but space is limited so we recommend buying tickets in advance. In addition, the ticket cost will be higher after the early bird deadline on May 7th and even higher at the door.

What is the refund policy?

There are no refunds or exchanges.

What is “Writing the Other: Bridging Cultural Differences in Genre Fiction”?


Writing the Other: Bridging Cultural Differences in Genre Fiction is an intensive four-hour workshop by authors Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward that will teach you to write sensitively and convincingly about characters of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Appropriate for all fiction writers, the workshop combines lectures, discussions, and writing exercises in a safe, supportive atmosphere. Students should bring a current story or novel chapter to use in some of the exercises (the exercise results will not be shown to the class).
